Synopsis

This book grew out of Professor Houston's long experience in giving a graduate course in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and its elementary applications. It is specifically designed to acquaint the student who has a working knowledge of elementary mathematical physics with a formulation of quantum mechanics and, by means of many illustrations and applications, to encourage him to develop some facility in its use, and enable him to understand published work in the field. The first part of the book is devoted to a formulation of quantum mechanics in the terms of Schrodinger's wave mechanics. This portion includes experimental evidence for the quantum theory, evidence for the inadequacy of classical mechanics, the two fundamental postulates of quantum mechanics, motion of a particle in a central field, approximate methods, and spin and the Pauli Exclusion Principle. The balance of the work is devoted to numerous important and fruitful applications of quantum physics in spectroscopy, collision problems, electrons in solids, and electro-magnetic radiation. Among the topics treated are hydrogen-like spectra, two-electron systems, some special cases of scattering, quantum statistical mechanics, behavior of an electron in gas, quantization of electromagnetic radiation in empty space, and interaction of radiation and matter.
