Motivating students from all engineering disciplines, this text encourages students to become engineers and prepares them with a solid foundation in fundamental principles and physical laws. The book begins by introducing students to the exciting world of engineering as they discover what engineers do as well as the various areas of specialization. After explaining good study habits and what it takes to succeed, Moaveni then prepares them for success with an introduction to design and problem solving, communication, and ethics. Once this foundation is established, the book moves on to the basic physical concepts and laws students will encounter regularly as engineering students. The text emphasizes that engineers apply physical and chemical laws and principles as well as mathematics to design, test, and supervise the production of millions of parts, products, and services that people use everyday. By gaining problem solving skills and an understanding of fundamental principles, students are on their way to becoming analytical, detail-oriented, and creative engineers.

Dr. Saeed Moaveni, P.E., is a successful author, instructor, and engineering professional. He joined the mechanical engineering faculty at Minnesota State University at Mankato in 1990. Currently a Professor and the Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department, he is a member of American Society for Engineering Education, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning Engineers.
Moaveni addresses all aspects of engineering applications with clarity while maintaining a good balance of textual and numerical explanations and examples at the right level of difficulty. It's this kind of book that one can easily suggest students keep as a reference book throughout their engineering education and beyond as it provides examples of some of the most commonly used engineering figures.
A major strength of this text is that it provides an excellent introduction to key topics that are fundamental to the engineering student.
This text cuts across lines within the discipline of engineering. It doesn't cover civil topics then mechanical topics in a linear fashion. It presents a way to think about engineering as a whole and it covers a lot of important topics.
