Margetts, writer and former editor/publisher of the British magazine Crafts , has created a visual survey of contemporary crafts. The works of more than 450 artists-craftspeople from North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan have been selected by an international group of curators and publishers from thousands of examples submitted. Handsomely photographed, the works exhibit a wide range of influences and inspirations and are divided in craft disciplines that include ceramics, textiles, jewelry and metal work, glass, baskets and wood, lettering and books, and furniture. An introductory essay discusses the word craft and its place in an industrialized society. Important developments, the range of materials and techniques, and the role of ethnic craft traditions in Western practice are briefly described before the photographic survey of each discipline. A detailed information section offers biographies of contributors as well as craft organizations, museums, galleries, and publications. For specialized craft collections.
