Reviews

This encyclopedia provides just over 1000 entries on a variety of contemporary music subjects. The coverage of composers focuses on the four continents that one would expect, with emphasis on the United States (131 figures) and Great Britain (92 figures); minorities and women are not particularly well served. There are helpful entries related to ensembles, instruments, and techniques and rather abbreviated treatments of specific compositions. Though the chronology of first performances that concludes the volume is useful, the general bibliography cites only 13 books. The prime value of this publication is that the information is up-to-date. Dominique-Rene de Lerma, Music Dept., Morgan State Univ., Baltimore
