The textile department of the Wiener Werkstatte was formally established around 1910, less than a decade after the inauguration of this famous and highly influential Viennese association of artists and craftsmen. The demand for fabrics for fashion interior was met by original designs from around 100 artists, including the association's co-founder Josef Hoffmann and other figures such as Dagobert Peche, Carl Otto Czeschka, Maria Likarz and Max Snischek. The result was one of the most remarkable legacies of modern textile design. This book draws on the original gouaches, pattern books and samples now in the collection of the Austrian Museum for Applied Arts, Vienna - a remarkable archive of over 1,800 recorded fabric designs. These range from the early organic motifs of Art Nouveau to later angular geometric designs of Art Deco, their history and development being fully documented in these invaluable records. A wealth of reproductions, many in colour, is supplemented by a catalogue of designs, and photographs of their use in fashion and decoration. The patterns and prints of the Wiener Werkstatte were some of the most popular and successful textiles of the early 20th century. A selection is presented in this illustrated compilation, based on the most comprehensive collection of Wiener Werkstatte designs in existence.

From Library Journal:

Josef Hoffman, Maria Likarz, and Dagobert Peche are among the 92 artists treated here whose textile designs for the Wiener Werkstatte (WW) combined florid 19th-century design with the abstract geometric of 20th-century modernism to create a complete environment in which printed fabrics were used not only for women's fashions but for wallcoverings, upholstery, and even lampshades and pillows. This first volume exclusively on WW textiles lists over 1300 patterns, each with its own name. The scrupulously documented text regarding fabric production and usage was made possible by meticulously kept records. In addition, more than 400 photographs (over 300 in color) offer the best possible quality reproductions of original samples and photos from the collection of the Osterreichisches Museum fur angewandte Kunst, Vienna, where Volker is head of the textiles department. The creative energy in these pages should inspire designers and students. Recommended for large or specialized collections.
