From his 1980 London arrival, armed with a suitcase and sewing machine, to his 1994 AIDS-related death, Leigh Bowery's life was extraordinary. Sue Tilley, his closest confidante, recounts his journey from a creative, gay Melbourne youth to a London club scene game-changer. Through their shared experiences friends, holidays, clubbing, drugs, fashion, and relationships Tilley paints a vivid 80s pop culture portrait. She also shares irreverent art world anecdotes, highlighting Leigh's close bond with Lucian Freud, who painted him frequently. The book concludes with a poignant, unsentimental hospital finale.
