When Jamie Mortimer interrupts Lady Aleta Summerfield's wedding to Lord Evan Grey, he claims her as his betrothed and asks the King to re-examine the evidence of treason against his father. The King agrees and soon Aleta finds herself married to a man who looks like a peasant. She is further horrified when he insists on consummating the marriage that very night. Since his father's estates were stripped away and given to Aleta's father and Grey, Jamie has made his home in Wales on his mother's land. When he and Aleta arrive, she is faced with his mistress, the sultry Rowena. Aleta discovers her husband is a smuggler known as The Lord of Darkness. Evan Grey follows Aleta to Wales and Jamie is enraged when he sees Grey kiss her and accuses her of betrayal. She denies his charge but he will not listen. He locks Aleta in her room, but with the help of Rowena, who wishes her gone, she escapes, only to be captured by Grey. Jamie gets her back, but when his midnight smuggling is discovered, he thinks she's betrayed him. He must prove his father's innocence and get Aleta back from Grey. Lord of the Night was originally released in '92 under the pseudonym Cara Miles, and is being re-released in its original form. It carries a heavy bodice ripper tone with plenty of purple prose, forced seductions, and accusations and denials between the hero and heroine. Mason never makes use of the Welsh setting and I had the feeling this book could have been set in England with the change of a few words. It seemed to be more of a costume drama than a historical novel. The plot was exciting however, with plenty of action and danger this book sweeps along to a rousing climax. Mason writes a danger-filled tale of passion and desire! Readers will not want for entertainment here! Phoebe Imel -- Copyright © 1998 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved -- From Literary Times
