Psychic Dean Campbell is on the trail of a killer who burns his victims alive. Searching through the streets of Taipei, he finds a link to the possible next victim: the love of his life, Mirabelle Lee, whom he thought had been dead for 20 years. Mirabelle is in Taipei doing archaeological research when a colleague discovers an artifact that could alter the world's knowledge of ancient China. When their paths finally cross, they discover the artifact could change the world itself. Liu's third entry in her Dirk & Steele series (Tiger Eye, 2005; Shadow Touch, 2006) cements her reputation as an irrefutable force in action-adventure romance. By combining comic-book thrills with passionate descriptive prose, Liu has carved out a unique voice not unlike the writing on the titular stone. The only flaw in the jewel is that there is so much going on, one aspect of the plot gets left behind. In its entirety, however, the novel superbly holds its own. Nina Davis
