When a sweet but slightly dotty neighbor and a magical emerald yank virginal, proper, soon-to-be-married Francine Peabody from her staid, predictable life in the present and thrust her into 13th-century England with the mandate to "civilize mankind," Francine is appalled by what she finds. Never mind that she was attacked, rescued, and then summarily stripped by her knightly rescuer, it is the filth, violence, and general barbarity of the place that is truly overwhelmingAand it is something she intends to change. A resourceful heroine who comes into her own and an honorable but cynical hero who doesn't believe in love clash their way to happiness in a lively, laughter-laced story that combines the crude brutality of the period with steamy sex, adds a dash of magic, and generally makes it work.
