Grade 2-4-- Applause is due for choosing a current orchestral director, especially one from the Orient , as the subject for a picture-story biography, but there the kudos end. The writing style is patronizing, talking down to the very audience it hopes to reach. Much, too much, is made of the fact that Ozawa was ostracized by some of the people of Japan for embracing Western music, but his bias toward that music is poorly explored. He is made to seem larger than life, a musical superhero. Young readers need to see any biographee as a real per?- son, and the subject does not come to life here. While children may be drawn in by the clear black-and-white photographs that appear on every page, the book is filled with sappy heroism and does not do justice to either Ozawa or readers. --Mollie Bynum, Chester Valley Elementary School, Anchorage, AK
