Gr. 1-3. Although the writing is choppy and confusing, this biography has appeal as a beginning reader about a familiar subject. Starting with Brown's lonely childhood in rural New York, the simple, balanced text touches on her education abroad, her work with Lucy Sprague Mitchell at Bank Street, her writing of children's books, and her tragic death at age 42. Some of the black-and-white photographs are unclear, but they do give a sense of the times in which Brown lived. The color reproductions from Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny will delight fans of those classics. An index and chronology are included but no bibliography or source notes. Julie Corsaro
