About the Author:

Patricia K Kummer is the author of several nonfiction books for children.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 7-10-In the opening chapter, Kummer vividly describes a music festival promoting pride in Ukrainian language and culture that took place just a few days before the new nation's declaration of independence. The following chapters are given over to geography, history, and the like. They are clearly written and have the details needed for reports, but many of the sidebars set off within the chapters are more engaging. They cover special topics such as space pioneers from Ukraine, a "deadly" soccer game during World War II, and descriptions of historically significant monuments. In addition, the author addresses the Russian and Tatar ethnic minorities. Excellent-quality, full-color photos and reproductions enhance the presentation. Throughout the book, names of cities and regions in Ukraine are correctly given in transliterations from Ukrainian spellings, but in some cases may be distracting to readers who are not familiar with names such as Krym for Crimea, especially in a reference to Krymian hills before the author has explained the term. While it is true that the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church was suppressed, the assertion made twice that "the Russian Orthodox Church was the only religion allowed in the Soviet Union" is simply false. Likewise, although the Ukrainian peasants may have borne the brunt of Stalin's collectivization policies, students unfamiliar with Soviet history might think that the Ukrainians were singled out, whereas peasants of other ethnic groups endured the same brutalities. Still, Kummer's book is superior to both Volodymyr Bassis's Ukraine (Benchmark, 1997) and Steven Otfinoski's Ukraine (Facts On File, 1999).
