Alice K Flanagan is the author of several nonfiction books for children. From School Library Journal:
K-Gr 1-These two attractive books offer children a glimpse into the life of a store owner and an apartment-maintenance contractor. The Kang family emigrated from Korea; Mr. Vasquez came from Chile. Both books give insight into a variety of everyday tasks that the men may perform. The minimal text is decorated with vivid photographs that invite browsing. However, those in Mr. Kang are much more colorful and have stronger visual appeal. (There is one black-and-white photograph that seems out of place alongside all of the beautiful color.) The photos in Mr. Vasquez are not as appealing, but are informative. Young readers are taken into a boiler room, see a broken water pipe, and are exposed to other aspects of apartment maintenance. For those interested in multicultural neighborhood books, both of these are adequate choices.-Katherine Borchert, Arlington Central Library, VA
