Gr 3-6--On April 4, 1968, America's best known civil rights leader was killed by an assassin's bullet as he stood with friends on the balcony of a Memphis motel. The turbulent events surrounding that tragic occurrence are related in this well-written series entry. Numerous black-and-white photographs add to the immediacy of the text, including both 1960 and current photos of James Earl Ray, convicted assassin. Additional features include excerpts from the "I Have a Dream" speech and a timeline of Dr. King's life. Stein's offering has more details about the people and events surrounding King's death and his place in history than Jim Haskins's The Day Martin Luther King, Jr., Was Shot (Scholastic, 1992), which provides a much broader look at the civil rights movement in the U.S.
