ea. vol: unpaged. (Start-Off Stories Series). CIP. Childrens. Nov. 1985. PLB $6.95. Grade 1-2In their attempt to adapt these stories for beginning readers, the au thors have condensed much of the con tent of the original tales. However, only in Country Mouse and City Mouse have details been altered significantly. The setting is the present, the story is told by the country mouse, and a noisy gar bage truck frightens him away from the city. Each page of text contains one or more short, simple sentences with lim ited vocabulary. Following each story is a word list containing between 30 and 90 words. Illustrations, executed in viv id, eye-pleasing colors, accompany and reinforce each page of text. The car toon-style drawings will delight chil dren, and the compact book size will facilitate easy handling. However, be cause of the lack of detail, some of the excitement of the original stories has been lost. It is as if the meat is missing from the sandwich, leaving only the bland taste of bread.Joan Hamilton Bowman, Bucks County Free Library, Bensalem, Pa.
