Grade 2-4-- Albert and Victoria are "walking bugs" who live on the 68th floor of the Empire State Building. When winter comes, Victoria does not want to go into hibernation and is lured away by Philippe's promises of a place that's warm all winter. As it turns out, his destination is the lights at the top of the Empire State Building, and Victoria does not like it there. In the meantime, Albert realizes that he can't live without her, and braves the elements to find her. They're overjoyed to see each other and decide to stay at the top after all. While there is some humor in the bugs' dialogue, this story is marred by inconsistencies of language and meager character development. Although the illustrations picture these creatures as ants, the text never explains what they are--and in fact, describes them as having heels, shoulders, and ankles. This type of anthropomorphizing quickly becomes annoying, as do the many cliches. A deeper problem lies in the relationship between Albert and Victoria. Readers never really feel the friendship between them, even though Albert risks his life for Victoria. For books about musical insects, stick to Seldon's Cricket in Time Square (Farrar, 1960) and for friendship between creatures, rely on E. B. White's Charlotte's Web (Harper, 1952). --Susan Fichtelberg, Woodbridge Public Library, N . J .
