Her idyllic and idiosyncratic world shattered by World War II, photojournalist Kitty Conway relies on her hard-won independence to reunite a family divided by war

British author Bridgwood spins an old-fashioned, fully dimensional novel about people who change and grow in the chaotic 1930s and '40s. Orphaned at age eight, narrator Kitty Conway is sent to live with her uncle Sir Ernest Winstanley, his wife and their six unruly offspring. Determined to be one of the gang, Kitty keeps up with their leader, Jack, who goads his siblings into playing wild games. Life is pure fun, especially for Kitty, who adores Jack, the only man she is to love. As the cousins mature, menacing historical events affect their lives. Defying her father, who admires Hitler, Frannie weds a Jew and lives with him in Paris; her sister Lexi, married to a German, resides in Berlin. Jack also becomes caught up in the Nazi web while Kitty, now a photographer, re cords ominous events in Europe and risks her life to save victims of the Third Reich. The family members who survive reunite for comfort after the war, building a stronger future on love and trust.

At the age of eight, Kitty Conway comes to live with her six Winstanley cousins and spends the next 16 years trying to become one of the group. Closest in age to Frannie, Kitty admires pretty, older Lexy and falls in love with the insouciant Jack. The four attend the 1936 Olympics and are introduced to Nazism in Berlin. Then Lexy falls in love with a German and elopes. When war comes, Kitty is visiting them and helps with their resistance efforts before escaping to England. She follows Jack to France to search for Fran, who has married a Jew and disappeared in Paris. Kitty's efforts to locate and return the scattered cousins to the family home result in her feeling complete acceptance at last. A different and enjoyable novel, this uses coincidence to advance the story too often but has some good characters. Recommended.
