Chris Martin's new relationship with Pete is interrupted by the discovery in the woods of a woman's mutilated body, and soon she is investigating the baffling case

British amateur sleuth and reporter Chris Martin, last seen in A Real Shot in the Arm , returns, still bent on divorcing husband Keith, moving in with lover Pete and doing the best reporting job she can for the Tipping Herald. Chris is assigned to cover the death of a woman thought to be the latest victim of the Face Murderer, who bludgeons his prey and then shoots them in the face. Investigating the victim's background, , Chris interviews those closest to the deceased and realizes that their stories don't add up. She also discovers information about a plumbing supply owner who wins public contracts by plying local big shots with porno films and topless waitresses. As Chris bumbles from clue to clue and blurts out her theories about the murder, Keith pesters her to take him back and the killer decides she must die. The tense plot line is punctuated by Chris's wry observations on an older woman's struggle to find a career and her quips about the elusiveness of love.

Business as usual for Tipping Herald reporter Chris Martin (A Real Shot in the Arm, 1990): minutes after she gets an anonymous note offering to expose a prominent businessman's ``wrongdoings,'' the informant, Rosemary Tindall, is found dead--the latest victim, it seems, of a serial killer--and the morning after Chris meets her new lover Pete Schiavo's ex-wife's second husband, John Redfern, he's arrested for the murder. Though the police turn John loose, they don't accept Chris's evidence that the crime took place a full day earlier- -so, besieged by her persistent, loathsome ex and her hectoring editor, she sets off on her own to tie Rosemary's death to that businessman's round of sex parties. Roome juggles suspects, clues, and domestic subplots with such dexterity, keeping the pot constantly aboil, that you hardly notice that her likable heroine is as naggingly intuitive and independent as her sisters in Mary Roberts Rinehart. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP.
