This is the first selective guide to Montreal and Quebec City, which host more than seven million visitors each year. More than a mere checklist of monuments and scenic sites, it conveys much of the history, lore, and spirit that has enabled these great French-speaking cities to endure and prosper in North America. Martin Kevan, a resident of Quebec with an insider's knowledge of the province, has organized this guide around short walking tours, each with a central theme. Illustrations.

This book will prove to be as interesting and entertaining for armchair travelers as it is valuable and practical for people on a journey. Kevan provides thorough and often unique coverage of Quebec City and Montreal. The history of both cities is presented in a captivating text. The author cleverly centers each of the 11 walking tours around a theme. The coverage is plentiful with an eye for detail, as shown in the lengthy description of Montreal's most distinct building, the Notre Dame Basilica. All the practical information one would hope to find is well presented with additional emphasis on parks within and vacation areas outside the cities. Another unique feature is the inclusion of folklore, stories on interesting people, and brief historical accounts that appear in smaller, bold-face type throughout which can be read independently. For an insightful look into the heart and history of French Canada, this reasonably priced guide will be hard to beat.
