The Paisley Museum, established in 1871, has over the years built up an enormous collection of shawls for display & research purposes. Just as important as the shawls themselves, however, are the manufacturers' original pattern books, which contain large numbers of examples of the various stages in producing a design for a shawl. 150 pieces of the best pieces of artwork from the Paisley Museum have been selected & have been faithfully reproduced in this lavishly illustrated volume. Dates of the designs & historical information have been included whenever possible, making the book important for both textile historians & students of design. The motif known to the English speaking world as the Paisley pattern has been in constant use for over 2000 years. It was introduced into Europe late in the 18th century and was soon copied by manufacturers in Britain and France. The shawls, which were the principle garments to be decorated with the motif remained popular for almost a century. In Britain, the town of Paisley was the largest producer of the shawls and although the industry no longer dominates, the fame of the pattern lives on. The Paisley Museum holds a collection of original manufacturers pattern books, which contain examples of the various stages in producing a design.
