Imagine seeing the warm, tropical ocean for the very first time, but not being able swim in it. Parent's Choice Award winner Kristine Franklin has created a character who knows exactly what this is like. Little Reina persuades her mother to let her go to the beach with her uncle and cousins, but she has to promise to not go near the waves. But the beautiful blue-green ocean is full of waves! Now Reina must sit on the hot, sandy beach until she can stand it no longer. With her uncle and cousins in pursuit, she runs down the beach, rounds a corner, and there, to everyone's complete astonishment and delight is a lovely, lazy lagoon. Best of all, it has no waves--the perfect place for her to swim without breaking her promise! Kris Franklin's exciting and satisfying tale and Lori Lohstoeter's lush, sunny paintings distinctly capture the sultry feel of the tropics, the cool ocean, and the indomitable spirit of a strong-willed little girl.

It's Reina's first trip to the beach. In exchange for permission to join her uncle and older cousins on the excursion, she's promised her mama that she'll stay away from the big waves. Can she resist the beautiful, tempting "rows of water like foamy mountains.... So wet and exciting!" on such a hot and sunny day?
It's a pretty close call, but with understanding and ingenuity and colorful, lively illustrations, Kristine Franklin and illustrator Lori Lohstoeter help Reina and her family find the middle ground between a broken promise and a spoiled day. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2. A delightful story of a family's integrity, love, and fun set in Central America. Little Reina promises her mother she'll stay out of the waves if she is allowed to go to Iguana Beach with Tio Benito and her cousins. The inviting surf entices Reina to jump in but her uncle catches her and reminds her of her promise. She plays in the hot sand and encounters a crab, an iguana, and a troop of monkeys while listening to her older cousins frolicking in the giant waves. When Tio nods off, Reina dashes down the beach for a quick swim. Pursued by her relatives, she runs faster and faster until she comes upon a tranquil lagoon. She pleads with her uncle to let her swim?there are no waves here and no promise will be broken. Joyously, all race into the calm water, satisfied with the turn of events. Lohstoeter's distinguished illustrations, with their colorful palette and lush flora, transport readers to a tropical paradise. The artist mixes and mingles vivid blues and creamy whites to create swirls of water and waves. The characters are drawn realistically with suntanned bodies and burnt noses. Though body proportions and facial features are slightly exaggerated, they enhance the pictures' charm. A good read-aloud and a nice introduction to this region's flora and fauna.?Susan Garland, Maynard Public Library, MA
