9780517709412: Ten Tiny Monsters

In order to make the monster team, ten tiny monsters must scare someone smaller than they are. But their intended victims scare them more! Slowly but surely, from ten down to none, the monsters drop out of the group. The Master Monster keeps track of just how many monsters are left by showing each subtraction--on his chalkboard--until only he remains. But being all alone, he realizes, is not nearly as much fun as being part of a group--even if they aren't very scary.  Combining counting and simple subtraction with an entertaining storyline and boldly bright and cheerful collage, Ten Tiny Monsters  is ideal for teachers and parents looking for a fun way to teach numbers.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1. When the Master Monster tells his 10 young apprentices that they must scare someone in order to make the team, they each set out with motivation. One by one, each four-toed, toothsome creature is met with defeat by animals who are either amused or bored or friendly. As each ghoulish character fails at its task, the Master Monster sends it down the mountain, thus creating a subtraction game for readers. Finally, all 10 monsters find fun and games in a lake at the bottom of the mountain and the lonely Master decides to join them. From the endpapers that include simple math problems and monster shadow shapes to count to the joyful rhyming text, this book is a playful countdown story. The cartoon monsters, sporting numbered jackets, are ugly enough to live up to their name and appealing enough to ward off any fears. The antics of these goofy creatures are sure to amuse as they dance and jump and flip through the action-packed pages. Pair this with Harriet Ziefert's Two Little Witches (Candlewick, 1996) or Tedd Arnold's Five Ugly Monsters (Scholastic, 1995) for a "scary," math-filled storytime.?Anne Knickerbocker, Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX
