The subject of this interesting biography was seemingly the archetype of the Fascist "new man," a violent Blackshirt instrumental in establishing Fascism in Italy and, as an aviation pioneer, recognized internationally as a genuine hero. Balbo was however opposed to such trends as racism and totalitarianism and, in effect, Fascism came to mean little more to him than patriotism and authoritarian government. This study of Mussolini's possible successor is yet another indication of Italian Fascism's ideological vagueness. Based partly on unpublished archival sources, its value also lies in detailing important elements of prewar Italian history. Two-thirds of the contents are devoted to Balbo's development of Italian aviation and his rule as Libya's colonial governor. Recommended for large academic collections. W.F. Young, SUNY at Albany Lib.
