Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Copy of David Gauthier, with his signature. x, 1 leaf, 314 pp. Original cloth. Very Good, in slightly worn dust jacket. John C. Harsanyi: Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, 1994 (shared with John F. Nash Jr. and Reinhard Selten), 'for their pioneering analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games.' 'I published four books. One of them, Rational Behavior and Bargaining Equilibrium in Games and Social Situations (1977), was an attempt to unify game theory by extending the use of bargaining models from cooperative games also to noncooperative games' (Harsanyi's Autobiography, at the Nobel Foundation Web site). Gauthier 'is is a Canadian-American philosopher best known for his neo-Hobbesian social contract (contractarian) theory of morality, as laid out in his book Morals by Agreement (1986)' (Wikipedia). Gauthier reviewed Harsanyi's book, Essays on Ethics, Social Behaviour and Scientific Explanation (1976), in Dialogue 17 (1978), 698-706, while Harsanyi wrote a review of Gauthier's book, including a discussion of Gauthier's view on rent, in Economics and Philosophy 3 (1987), pp. 345-48. There 'is a tradition that sees morality as the intentional result of the interactions between ideally rational agents under ideal circumstances. This is an old idea in moral and political philosophy: it is the doctrine of the social contract. The introduction of game theory, as well as insights from decision theory, has contributed to the huge interest in this idea over the last decades. John Rawls, John Harsanyi, Richard Braithwaite, Brian Barry and much later David Gauthier have used the tools of game and decision theory to formulate their versions of the theory' (Bruno Verbeek, Game Theory and Moral Norms: An Overview and an Application, Australian National University, CJP, 11 July 2002). In 2001, the Cambridge University Press published a festschrift for Gauthier, Practical Rationality and Preference: Essays for David Gauthier, edited by Christopher W. Morris and Arthur Ripstein; Harsanyi's Essays (1976) is cited in footnote 1 of Ripstein's Preface on p. 53. Seller Inventory # 19736
