Synopsis

This is a study of an important figure of the second generation of Hudson Valley landscape painters. Worthington Whittredge was active from around 1840 to the turn of the century, and was much influenced by preceding generations of artists so that the evolution of his style serves as an index to the changing concepts of American landscape painting. Moreover his ten-year sojourn in Dusseldorf and Rome allows us to gauge the impact of foreign influences on the native tradition.

Reviews

Publishing works on little known yet important artists is the raison d'etre of the "Cambridge Monographs on American Artists" series. One of the initial entries in this new series, this first critical study of Whittredge (1820-1910) fills an obvious need and also serves to accompany a traveling exhibition on the artist. A member of the second generation of the Hudson River School, Whittredge studied in Cincinnati, Dusseldorf, and Rome. He is largely remembered for landscapes of New York and New England scenery, some of which he rendered in the style of the Barbizon school. Nearly 200 works are illustrated in this scholarly biography. Whittredge does not come across as a compelling figure, no doubt an accurate reflection of his personality. Recommended for libraries with strong American art holdings.
