We are now in the "Age of Environmental Enlightenment" and global warming is seen as a major threat to the well-being of the world's communities. Today many researchers speculate that with global warming of the atmosphere there will be an increase in drought-related crop failures in areas already subject to drought. They contend that dry areas will get drier and wet areas wetter. Yet observations show that people are moving into regions that are relatively less fruitful with respect to agriculture productivity than the lands from which they emigrated. This book challenges the view that future droughts will be caused by climate change as opposed to human activities and demographic change. The author predicts future problems in these fragile environments, whether or not global climate changes occur. This book will intrigue researchers in environmental biology, environmental sciences, popular science, and agriculture, as well as policy makers and students.

Book Description:

Challenging the popular view that future droughts will be caused by climate change as opposed to human activities and demographic variations, this study predicts that such problems will occur in fragile environments, whether or not global climate alteration occurs.

From the Back Cover:

Michael Glantz draws attention to the relationship between society and climate change. He examines the notion that 'drought follows the plow.' With contributions from colleagues in the worst hit areas of the world, the author challenges what is a nineteenth-century belief, that human activity can bring an increase in rainfall.

Book Description CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2007. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. People around the globe are becoming increasingly aware that our use of the land has an effect on the environment in which we live. Global warming is seen as a major threat to the well-being of the world s communities. Fear abounds, but does anyone really know what is going on? Will human activity make things worse? In this 1994 book, the author examines the relationship between society and climate change. With contributions from colleagues in the worst hit areas of the world, the author shows how some patterns of land use can make the problems worse; increasing the risk of droughts and associated food shortages. This book will help scientists and researchers assess our impact on the planet and consider our ability to respond to the consequences of future environmental change.
