The Cambridge History of the English Language provides a full account of the history of English. Its authoritative coverage extends from areas of central linguistic interest and concern (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, dialectology) to more specialised topics such as personal and place names, literary language and slang. The volumes dealing with earlier periods are chronologically based, whilst those dealing with more recent periods are geographically based, thus reflecting the spread of English over the last 300 years. Each volume is edited by a leading expert on the period in question, heading an international team of contributors, and contains a glossary of linguistic terms and and extensive bibliography and index. The History has been written with both specialists and students in mind and provides an essential reference resource for those interested in the development of English from its beginnings in Anglo-Saxon England to its present-day role as a multifaceted global language.

Review:

'... the fullest treatment of the language of the period available in one place to date.' Language

'A distinguished team of contributors...much to admire. This handsome volume is an indispensable work of reference.' John Honey, Times Higher Education Supplement

'A work on language as a manifestation of cultures and their changes, English in North America is a magisterial achievement, and a fitting completion of The Cambridge History of the English Language.' Amerikastudien

'Try volume VI of The Cambridge History of the English Language: English in North America, edited with great flair by John Algeo ... here you will find a delicious chapter on slang by Jonathan E. Lighter ... the most useful part of Cambridge's monumental effort is the glossary.' New York Times

'The entire volume is written in a manner that makes the subject both interesting and attractive. The scholarship is there but is not in a form - so frequent in many linguistic works - that is incomprehensible to non-linguists. The contributors, editor and Cambridge University Press are all to be congratulated on another outstanding contribution to our understanding of what has become the world's language.' Contemporary Review

"Essential reading..." Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts

"Edited with great flair....Here you will find a delicious chapter on slang by Jonathan E. Lighter...The most useful part of Cambridge's book is the glossary." The New York Times

"Comprehensive in scope and impressive in quality of scholarship...certain to become a classic.... The entire set is essential for all libraries whose patrons may have an interest in the history of English." Choice

"[T]he Cambridge History of the English Language is a notable project; anyone who teaches courses in the literature of the period will find it useful and anyone who teaches the history of the language will find it invaluable." Kathleen M. Ward, Sixteenth-Century Journal

..."nearly all of the material is quite clearly presented, well analyzed, and brings out aspects of English...that could easily be overlooked since the language has not changed nearly as much in the current period as it did in the previous seven hundred years." Notes on Linguistics
