9780521844826: Democracy from Above: Regional Organizations and Democratization

Few scholars have systematically examined whether the world outside a state's borders can influence the prospects for democracy. Jon Pevehouse argues that regional organizations, such as the European Union and the Organization of American States, can have an important role in both the transition to, and the longevity of, democracy. Combining statistical analysis and case study evidence, Pevehouse finds that regional organizations can be a potent force for instilling and protecting democracy throughout the world.

About the Author:

Jon C. Pevehouse is Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin. He has published in journals such as the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, International Organization, the Journal of Politics and the Journal of Conflict Resolution.

Review:

"In this useful study...Pevehouse's statistical tests establish connections between membership in a highly democratic regional organization and the probability of a democratic transition--a conclusion confirmed by his case studies."
Foreign Affairs

"Democracy from Above bridges disciplinary and methodological categories in a smart and thorough way. Students of both international organizations and democratization will have to contend with the book's convincing conclusions, and policymakers should as well."
Alexander Thompson, Ohio State University, Review of International Organizations

Book Description CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2015. Hardback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Since the momentous events of the late 1980s, democratic transition has been a widely studied phenomenon. Most scholars who have investigated the causes and implications of the global trend to democracy have argued that domestic politics is the leading determinant in the success or failure of transitions to democracy. In this book, Jon Pevehouse argues that international factors, specifically regional organizations, play an important role in the transition to and endurance of democracy. Domestic elites use membership of regional organizations to advance the cause of democracy since these organizations can manipulate the costs and benefits of democracy to important societal groups such as business elites or the military. Six cases (Hungary, Peru, Greece, Paraguay, Guatemala, and Turkey) examine the causal processes behind the statistical association between regional organizations and democratization. These findings bridge international relations and comparative politics while also providing guidelines for policy-makers who wish to use regional organizations to promote democracy.
