What initially looks like another hijacking novel turns out to be a rather engrossing police procedural that pits Raymond Hyte, NYPD hostage negotiator, against the evil and mysterious Samael, "God's messenger of death." Hijackers commandeer Trans Air Flight 88, but the episode ends in death for the PLO splinter group responsible. Nine months later, someone stalks surviving hostages. Because he dates the rich and attractive daughter of two former hostages and is haunted by what he views as personal failure, Hyte feels compelled to stop Samael. Once beyond the hijack sequence, the plot becomes much better and more suspenseful, although Samael's true identity leaps out all too soon. REK
