Kindergarten-Grade 2 Nothing could be further from The Perfect Day for Kevin, whose family is off to the beach for the day. Things go wrong from the start, and only when a sudden storm comes up and Kevin rushes out to play in the wind and rain does his day seem acceptable. Readers are shown only one side of Kevin herea whining, spoiled, and dissatisfied childand everyone else in the family either ignores or tries to placate him. While Prater's expressive watercolors are of high quality, young readers are not likely to identify with Kevin's character. Better choices on the same theme are Joan Lexau's I Should Have Stayed in Bed (Harper, 1965) and Judith Viorst's stalwart Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (Atheneum, 1972).
