Grade 6-9 Single father Adam Derman, for whose son Imogen babysits, is handsome, sensitive, and not a bit callow like the boys she knows in school, or irresponsible like her parents, who live on the dwindling royalties of her grandmother's aunt's cookbook, or dotty like her grandmother. Beset by allergies and insecure in spite of her looks, charm, and talents, she falls head over heels for Adam. Of course, he behaves like a gentleman. Of course, he makes her realize her worth. Of course, he gives her confidence. Of course, he recognizes what a terrific person she is. And, of course, Imo survives her first crush, learns to love and respect her eccentric family, and begins a more appropriate flirtation with a cute guy in her allergist's office. Peopled with likable characters, uncomplicated, funny, and keenly tuned to the concerns of adolescents, this is a slight quick read that young YAs will enjoy. Not as easy reading as the author's Beach Towels (1982) , Thunderbird (both Dutton, 1985) , and her other hi/los, this will nevertheless appeal to older YAs who need high/not-quite-so-lows.
