From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1 Bears, beds, telephones, motorcycles, saxophones, baby chicks, rats, and stuffed animals are just a few of the many objects humorously illustrated on the 16 pages of this very oversized, almost wordless, French import. Sizes, roles, and relationships are among the items that change from page to page. At the start, a cloth doll blows chicks into soap bubbles which float across the page to where three chicks hold out a leaf to catch them. An array of other odd-sized animals and people watch. On subsequent pages readers progress through a line of static inanimate objects, to more activity by the chicks, a cat, and a child. Disorder mounts as the neat lines of objects begin to change: the plump business man's head is replaced by such things as a pear, scissors, and a feather. At last the lines are abandoned; riotous activity in which fish fly, mushrooms play the saxophone, snails race motorcycles, and other equally impossible juxtapositions fill the pages. This book should be popular in classrooms with pre- and beginning readers. The incongruities and constantly changing relationships should amuse some children for hours, while others may just find it puzzling. Its awkward size and shape will make it almost impossible to shelve. It's ideal for creative classroom use and one-to-one sharing, but it is not likely to move on its own. Anno's books are more satisfactory alternatives. Louise L. Sherman, Anna C. Scott School, Leonia,

From Publishers Weekly:

This unique, album-sized volume (16 10) initially seems cumbersome, but readers will quickly discover that it is in excellent proportion to the material contained inside. A wordless story follows a progression of small events: chicks in bubbles waft gently across a spread. Household objects, barnyard animals and fantastic figures (a traffic policeman with many arms, for example) appear, disappear and turn up again to interact with each other in a way that borders on surreal. The more a child retains from successive viewings, the fuller the story becomes. Bordered in black ink, the colored illustrations convey not only the minute details of the design, but also the broadly comic, somersaulting action of several main characters. The burgeoning story line will inspire lively discussion during lap-time readings. All ages.
