Grade 1-3-- Al and Annie have lost their fat cat, Wendall, and neighborhood detective, Rhymin' Simon, is called in to crack the case--because the only thing he likes ". . . better than making rhymes is solving crimes." Following leads from local pest, Billy Hatcher, and the kindly Mrs. Fisher, the threesome spots a cat's pawprints leading to Mr. Snipeman's (a.k.a. Snipemonster) yard. When they finally confront the evil catnapper, they discover that he's really a kindly fellow who has kept Wendall comfortable while she had her kittens. Black-and-white cartoon sketches add much to the humor of this beginning reader, and the accompanying dialogue balloons are integral to the progress of the very predictable plot. While the premise is clever, the rhyming is inconsistent, often silly, and rather forced. Nevertheless, the short , dialogue-laden chapters are in keeping with the other series' entries, and, while there is little danger of Simon's replacing Nate the Great, the book could serve as an additional purchase where easy-to-read mysteries are in demand. --Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, Wheeler School, Providence, RI
