Slapstick humor and a flap-book format delightfully combine in an oversized, brightly colorful collection of ten rhyming riddles in which the riddle's last word is hidden under the artfully designed flap.

Grade 3-4-Agee has shown himself to be a master of wordplay and visual puns in his inventive picture books, such as The Incredible Painting of Felix Clousseau (1988), and in his collection of palindromes, Go Hang a Salami! I'm a Lasagna Hog! (1992, both Farrar). Here, he turns his attention to poetry with equally unexpected results. What might have been a trite rehash of many a flap book is instead a genuine delight. Flapstick offers 10 brief, silly poems. The final line of each is completed by a picture underneath a flap, providing the kind of surprising, visual zing that makes Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein so popular. The realistic but exaggerated illustrations take full command of the comic potential in the rhymes, playing with perspectives and expanding the scenarios. This book is a salute to the zaniness in all of us.

Elegant, lighthearted fun: ``10 Ridiculous Rhymes with Flaps''--e.g., ``The maestro Leopardo/Sat down to play some Bach./It sounded very pleasant/But smelled like an old--'' (grand piano lid lifts to reveal a sock). The visual and verbal clues will lead most readers to anticipate the answers--plus offer enough difficulty for a feeling of accomplishment (a key's on the back). Best are Agee's comical, boldly limned illustrations in a cartoony style distinguished by expressive figures, inventive use of space, and a striking yet subtle palette. Sturdy pages and construction, but nowhere to accommodate library fixtures without disrupting an essential spread. (Picture book. 3-8) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
