When two mothers and their toddlers enjoy a day at the zoo, they get a special look at how animal mothers and their babies interact in their own special ways.

Ashley Wolff is the illustrator of many favorite children s books, among them the Miss Bindergarten series. She is also the creator of her own wonderful picture books, including two glowing books about Stella and Roy.
PreS--From sunup to sundown, repetitive, rhyming phrases describe a day in the life of two toddlers, one a blond-haired girl and the other an African-American boy. The mothers and children rejoice in one another's company with the constant refrain, "Me baby, you baby." After the morning routine of waking up and getting dressed, both pairs meet at the bus and head for the zoo. Once there, all four of them enjoy looking at the animals ("Warm baby, cold baby,/tucked-in-a-fold baby"). One youngster makes a mess eating an ice-cream cone, and the other falls down while chasing a bird. The day comes to a close with dinner, bath, and bed. With its rhythmic text and delicate gouache artwork, this is a delightful book to share with two- and three-year-olds. The words are printed in gently curving lines, an effect that adds to the intimacy of the illustrations. A warm and loving story that deserves space on library shelves.--Linda Staskus, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH

PreS. As the day dawns, two mothers wake their toddlers ("Stretch baby, yawn baby, here comes the dawn, baby"), and head off for the zoo. The two toddlers discover animal babies ("Warm baby, cold baby, tucked-in-a-fold baby"), snack, run, play, and finally return home with their mothers. After dinner, each washes up and heads for bed, "Sleep baby, tight baby, turn off the light baby." The bouncy rhyme scans well and flows naturally. Babies and toddlers will enjoy the pattern and anticipate the word baby. The realistic gouache illustrations, swathed in soft rainbow colors, portray two loving families, one black and one Caucasian, as they move through the day. Sweet but never precious, the art includes details to discover at a second reading. Animals are identified on the verso of the title page, but the stars of the story are the babies themselves.
