PreSchool-Grade 3-This is a knowing yet cheerful look at family travel: "Boring,/Snoring,/Zilch to do./Someone pinched me!/Wonder who?/Open sunroof-/Bye-bye, shoe!" The title question is asked repeatedly. The backseat looks smaller and smaller as the brother, sister, dog, various games, books, luggage, and a picnic basket vie for space. McNeill's wacky, full-color art perfectly captures the claustrophobia, car sickness, monotony, and relief when the family finally reaches its destination, where the adults look happy to sit on a bench with the dog while the kids play with bumper cars. A confusing detail: in one picture, a parent's watch says 5:15, but the scene that follows appears to be set in the hottest part of the day. This book can be used with Maggie Smith's Counting Our Way to Maine (Orchard, 1995) and David McPhail's Pigs Ahoy! (Dutton, 1995) for a fun storyhour about vacations.
