Grade 4-6-- This collection of eight scary tales is right on target; each story is more intriguing than the one before. Readers are continually surprised, repelled, scared, and appalled at the turn of events that takes place in each superb narrative. When Janet expresses her dislike of helping her mother with her flower garden, she is slowly transformed into a geranium. Tom builds a radio that tells tomorrow's news today. A music teacher sells her orphan students' souls to keep her youth. A spell found in an old magic book turns an ordinary dog into a beast of prey. McDonald weaves his magic creating and sustaining an appropriately scary mood that will delight youngsters and be ideal for reading aloud. Storytellers looking for new materials can find a fresh approach; children are sure to select the book because of the interesting cover art.
