A little girl and her grandmother share many activities together.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Hirschi recreates his grandmother's world, portraying her as a young girl remembering a summer in the country with her grandmother. Time is spent gardening, fishing, and picnicking, but their activities center around tending the potato fields. The grandmother's world is not fully realized, though; the narration is unfortunately not true to a child's voice. At times, the writing seems pretentious and awkward--`` . . . dancing fire begins to warm the tiny house'' and `` . . . stars twinkle like potato blossoms in the dark night sky . . . .'' Haeffele's paintings make effective use of color and light to create rural scenes and the sense of days gone by; however, the human figures seem stiff and posed, giving a formal feeling that conflicts with the warmth and familial love the story is attempting to portray. Overall, a well-meaning but unspectacular effort that won't be missed. --Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI
