Reviews

Gr. 5-7. Younger readers will enjoy these eight short stories with hints of the supernatural. In the first and most suspenseful tale, Gina tries to investigate frightening rumors about the school's band director, only to discover that another administrator is the individual responsible for the gruesome disappearance of several students and teachers. The rest of the stories are milder in subject matter, but all stretch reality. In several, the brush with the supernatural takes place in a dream--or does it? A long-forgotten death resurfaces in the identical dreams of each girl at a slumber party given by the killer's daughter. Another dream reveals an unforgiving whale taking revenge on its human predators. The settings for the stories are varied. While traveling out west, Becky and her family learn the hard way that it pays to be kind to strangers. As carnival king, Tom needs to rent a tux, but he doesn't realize that wearers of the formal attire take on the personality of previous renters. Sophisticated readers may be disturbed at the recurrence of the dream technique, but all the tales are easy to read and entertaining. Susan DeRonne
