Although at first resentful when his mother forces him onto the high school swim team to lose weight, Michael eventually gains a new self-confidence and strength of character from the experience.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 6-9 Although Hopper's book offers pat solutions to several aspects of adolescent male angst (sibling rivalry, date anxiety, and money problems as well as poor self image), the superficial treatment probably won't put off readers hungry for a quick, slick read. Mike Thatcher, 16-year-old junk food junkie and TV watcher, is put on a diet and signed up for the school swim team by his mother and doctor. As the pounds melt away and his muscles firm, he discovers a facility for diving and the courage to approach girls for a date. He also, with the benefit of some junior high drum lessons, substitutes for his sleek older brother in a rock band and earns his own share of fans' screams by the end of his second gig. Sure there are a few hitches, such as the girl of his dreams sneering when he asks her out, but he sails pretty smoothly through this journey of self-discovery. As with other Hopper books on adolescent problems (i.e., Ape Ears and Beaky Dutton, 1984), the key to success seems to be a parent's insistence on professional help. In Jan Greenberg's The Pig-Out Blues (Farrar, 1982), the mother is a large part of the problem, and success comes only through a painful process of trial and error and self-examination, making it a much more realistic and complex story.
