Grade 4-7-- A comprehensive, well-done overview of an oft-misunderstood disease. Beginning with examples of children who have been bitten by rabid animals, Landau offers information on how the disease is tranmitted and manifests itself, treatment, and ways to protect oneself, and then traces its spread across the country. She is not an alarmist, but is intent on developing an awareness in readers. Writing is clear, concise, and absorbing. Fair-to-good quality full-color photographs add interest, but be forewarned, a few are grisly. While the topic is covered to a lesser extent in some reference books, this title will be most useful where reports on diseases are a standard assignment. It will also appeal to browsers. --Denise L.
