From the first page, author Sharyn Wolf jumps undauntedly into resolving the conflicts that can taint, and even ruin, love relationships. Wolf writes with a disarming sense of humor and a wealth of knowledge gleaned from her years of experience as a marriage counselor, and includes true-life vignettes that offer insights into healthy, thriving relationships. With chapters such as "I Want to End Our Fights," "I Have Problems That I Want to Change," and "I Want to Work on Our Sex Life," help for specific problems is concise and easy to find.

How to Stay Lovers for Life eschews psychobabble and stays in the realm of the ultrapersonal, providing great tips for avoiding emotional button pushing, evaluating your timing, and refraining from using the dreaded "Let's talk" phrase--and it even includes racy tips for spicing up your sex life. Wolf says that when you're faced with painful conflict in relationships, it's important to remember that it happens in every partnership, and it's "how you handle these feelings when they occur that is the difference between a golden anniversary and alimony." --Jhana Bach

Wolf, a New York couples therapist and relationships expert, has made some rather odd assumptions in this book. For example, though the title seems to indicate that her book is aimed at happy couples, the overarching assumption here is that all couples spend the vast amount of their time together either unhappy or angry?or both. Wolf also assumes that any couple who happens to read through this book will want to engage in time-consuming, rather irritating exercises such as charting the exact times and places when one is happy or unhappy with one's partner, creating a family tree that shows shaky relationships, and participating in intense listening exercises. Still, the book does have many tips, called "Guerrilla Mating Tactics," that readers will appreciate, and Wolf's previous Guerrilla Dating Tactics (Dutton, 1993) and frequent talk-show appearances could generate interest.
