The Dustdobbin under his bed shrinks Billy Que down to its own size to teach him what it is like to be small, and he must get freely offered gifts from five stubborn boys before regaining his normal size

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- A satisfying, rib-tickling yarn featuring many of the characters introduced in Burgoo Stew (Orchard, 1991). In this title, the usually amiable relationship between Billy Que and the Dustdobbin who lives under his bed is disrupted when the man carelessly steps on the little fellow and fails to show any remorse. Such disrespect calls for retaliation, and the indignant mite cuts the brazen Billy down to size--soupspoon size to be exact. He's very unhappy with his diminutive stature and must, of course, meet certain conditions before being reinstated to his ``true and natural'' size. Along the way, he receives some unexpected kindness from five stubborn, bad boys who come to his aid just to be contrary. Patron's engaging tale has the richness of language and homespun wisdom found in Carl Sandburg's Rootabaga Stories , and makes a natural read-aloud choice. Shenon's black-ink drawings with pale watercolor washes are flat, uncluttered, and very effective. Their simple lines and use of perspective subtly reinforce the understated humor. A gratifying bit of whimsy with some positive life lessons rolled in for good measure.

From Publishers Weekly:

One of those mysterious dust creatures that seem to multiply beneath the furniture takes on a life of its own in this newest collaboration from Patron and Shenon ( Burgoo Stew ). A magical talking dustdobbin gets more than his feelings hurt when ornery Billy Que carelessly steps on him. Eager to teach Billy a lesson about respecting "small folk , " the dustdobbin shrinks Billy to the size of a teaspoon and threatens to leave him that way unless he meets a challenge. With the help of five bad boys (who turn out to be "not so bad"), Billy regains his "true and natural size"--with a whole new outlook. Patron's energetic text features folksy turns of phrase that give her tale a jolly "country bumpkin" tone. Billy Que's innocence and benevolence are likeable and refreshing. Shenon's ink and watercolor illustrations employ skewed perspectives to diverting effect; many imaginative touches include anthropomorphic dust and a bottle-top that becomes Billy's cap. This tale may well pique the curiosity of those who haven't recently checked under the bed. Ages 3-6.
