PreSchool-Grade 1?One night, when she can't sleep, Sophie seeks her mother's comforting lap. Her mother is pregnant, and the little girl remembers being told that every girl and woman has a womb in which babies can grow. When Sophie drifts off to sleep rubbing her own belly, she dreams first of an empty cradle, and then of a room filled with celebrating relatives, but she cannot get near Mama. Of course these dreams reflect her own worries that when the new baby comes, she will be denied affection and attention. Her mom sweetly reassures her that mothers always have room in their hearts and arms and laps for all their babies, and Sophie drifts off to a happy sleep. This kind of reaffirmation of parental love for an older sibling has been done many times before, and although this story is not a memorable addition to the genre, it will make a satisfying bedtime tale. Stock's boldly colored, vibrant pastels set on gray backgrounds focus on the figures and add a great deal of verve to the story. This is not an essential first purchase, but it is a pleasant enough debut for Howitz, and something different and quite nice for Stock's fans.?Rosanne Cerny, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
