ea. vol: 32p. photogs. glossary. index. (Picture Library Series). Watts. Mar. 1985. PLB $9.40. Grade 3-5 Each of these books crams information on space and the human exploration of it into a 32-page easy-reading format. They compare favorably with similar volumes in the "New True Books" series (Childrens), although depth of coverage suffers from the straightjacketed format. Using a minimum of technical terms, Astronauts covers the life, training and equipment of astronauts and cosmonauts. It not only includes photos of women, black and Soviet astronauts but almost completely avoids sexist language in the text. The Moon actually covers human exploration of the moon, primarily the Apollo missions, although the chronology includes Soviet efforts. It gives a good description of the surface but almost nothing of its properties (gravity) or its place in human affairs. The constricted format has the most impact on Planets : only a few bits of information about the planets are given, and the attention given to their moons seems disproportionate. The common format is useful if monotonous: a brief introduction; the text, with at least one color photograph per page; a "story" chronology of interesting trivia; glossary and index. The type is medium-large, set in newspaper-like columns for easier reading, but captions are in smaller print. In comparison, the "New True Books" have larger type, more pages and more historical presentation, but not all of their photos are in color; they have less detail, especially in the photo captions; smaller page size and lack the introduction, chronology and trivia. Useful for early readers and learning-disabled children. Jonathan R. Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library, Lynnwood, Wash.
