ea. vol: illus. by authors. 64p. index. (Illustrator's Library Bks.). CIP. Watts. Mar. 1986. PLB $9.90. Grade 7 Up Though not for beginners, these two books clearly demonstrate a variety of tools and techniques for the enrichment of basic sketches. They list and illustrate basic pens and pencils and show the variety of line and texture which can be achieved. A number of exercises are suggested, from quick sketches to fine line drawings. There are also tips on how to find subjects and the importance of carrying a basic sketchbook. Pen and Ink has a chapter on exercising the imagination, which includes some unusual techniques. Pencil includes a chapter on structure and the use of shading to indicate form and an excellent chapter on the use of line to create a personal illustration style. A final chapter in each book shows how elements from quick sketches can be combined to create finished illustrations. The authors stress the need to experiment with a variety of compositions to determine which tells the story most clearly. The books assume a basic knowledge of drawing and a fairly high degree of skill, but for students who are ready , they give a variety of techniques while stressing the need for continuous practice and experimentation to achieve both the skill and personal style of a successful illustrator.
