From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8 This basic instructional book outlines the materials needed for drawing in pastel and charcoal and explains how to use texture, line, and patterns to create different effects. In the section on supplies, the authors do not explain the difference between oil and chalk pastels, and students might purchase the wrong materials. The authors also suggest storing supplies in a taboret, and this would be expensive for young people. They do not suggest that a simple cardboard portfolio and supply box would be as useful. The sections on texture, line, and motion, and the section on shapes and patterns are the best portions of the book. Here the authors stress working large and with expression. The ideas for using stencils for shapes and letters could be incorporated into a junior high art class and are nicely presented. The two projects in the section on designing a book cover are pedestrian and will not stimulate the interest of young artists. Children will be more excited by the techniques demonstrated in Ames' How to Draw Star Wars Heroes, Creatures, Spaceships & Other Fantastic Things (Random, 1984) or Emberley's Dinosaurs (Little, 1980). Although few new ideas are presented in this book, the black-and-white drawings accompanying the text are well done, and libraries needing additional art books could find this a supplement to basic ``how-to-draw'' books.
