Grade 7-12 These books complement each other with clear, concise, and practical tips for young adults not planning to attend a traditional four-year college. . . . Careers Without College is somewhat misnamed, since a few careers in it do require minimal college course work. (Specialized training and education requirements are fully explained in Dubrovin's book.) Each particular occupation covered includes a basic job description, preparation needed, and career outlook. Jobs range through the fields of sales and marketing, health, office and business, industry, building trades, and service industries. College : Yes or No? (Arco, 1983) by William F. Shanahan is stronger on most topics covered here but its facts and addresses are quickly dated, and it omits self-employment as a choice. Alternative Education & Training handles the decision-making and career planning element, then delves into the methods for reaching career goals. Those methods include alternative college programs (correspondence courses, "weekend college," etc.), attending trade or vocational schools, learning on the job, military training, apprenticeships, and self-employment. These books have good quality, non-sexist, black-and-white photographs. Attractive and effectively organized, they are written in a straightforward style. Besides providing helpful career planning information, both encourage the ideas of lifelong learning and continually keeping career options open. Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, Ariz.
