Reviews

Grade 2-4-- Pomona is a blackfooted penguin who was hatched at the New England Aquarium. This book follows her life through the incubation period to the day she takes up residence in the aquarium pool. Detailed progress of the hatching process and of the special care taken to re-create natural nesting and feeding behaviors by aquarium caretakers is recorded. Large, well-spaced print and clear, full-color photographs document the story. An up-to-date bibliography is included. Maps indicating locations of various penguin species serve as endpapers, and an afterword discusses their threatened environments throughout the world. Use this with Penguin (Morrow, 1988) by Caroline Arnold to develop an understanding of the precautions taken to insure the survival of this bird through the efforts of aquariums and zoos.
