Grade 6-10-- The circumstances of his birth and youth are very sketchy, but the stars had to be in the right orbit in 1931 when Yasir Arafat was born, as he has led a charmed life. An obstreperous child who developed into a rebellious youth, he has organized terrorist activities against the state of Israel, against Arabic peoples and nations of the Middle East, as well as other peoples and nations throughout the world who have supported Israel. Because of these terrorist activities, and the rivalry for control within the PLO, many attempts have been made on Arafat's life, which he miraculously has eluded. The names of people and places in the Middle East were not part of most students' vocabulary before August, 1990. However, world events since then, along with this approachable text, will give them an opportunity to understand better the history, politics, and events in this part of the world. This brief book that includes excerpts from the Palestinian National Covenant, footnotes, and a bibliography can only begin to introduce readers to this complex man and to the PLO. Alan Hart's Arafat : Terrorist or Peacemaker? (Olive Branch Pr, 1988) will give them more in-depth information.
